Each puppy was born healthy at approximately 5oz and without complications. They have all steadily gained weight week after week. They received their care from our friends at Ashby Animal Clinic in Harrisonburg, VA, and are listed as “Sophie’s 4 puppies.” The darlings have received DNA testing from Embark to identify their breed heritage and possible future health tendencies.
Each baby has been microchipped and can be registered to the new owner. All of the puppies have received a clean bill of health from the vet, have been updated on all their vaccinations, including rabies, are dewormed, and are ready for individualized attention. The new pet owner will be provided with a care package to take home with their new family member.
They respond to praise better than criticism or physicality. The puppy is eager to learn and wants to please their family.
The Maltese has high maintenance, long, silky coats requiring daily brushing, but shed little hair; a plus for those with certain allergies. This breed is intelligent and playful but is just as eager to sit with you and nap. They are generally very protective and make the smallest (and cutest) watchdogs with a high-pitched bark to quickly alert you to the leaf that flew by.
The puppies have been socialized with cats, dogs, and children. Both parents are on site. They have been loved, handled, nuzzled, and made over, but will still require obedience training, house training, and lots of patience.
They have learned how to play from their litter mates and love to follow mom and dad around the farm to explore each blade of grass. They live and sleep indoors. They are happy and a lighthearted breed.
Make sure you research the Maltese prior to a purchase or adoption to assure this breed is suitable to your family’s lifestyle. Maltese grow to be approximately 7-9 inches tall. Generally, they weigh 7 lbs. or less and live 12-15 years. These dogs are independent but extremely attached and affectionate with their “people.” They get along well with other dogs and children, though supervision is always recommended.
Dad is Cesar and is able to be registered by the AKC. He is 100% Maltese and his lineage can be traced back more than 3 generations as required by the Kennel Club’s organization. He's confident in his history and knows it!

Aw, melt my heart! Mom is Sophie. She cannot be registered by the AKC. She is quite lovely, and Embark DNA showed her to be 82% Maltese and 18% Bichon.

Is the purchase of a puppy out of reach? Why not try your local ASPCA? Many beautiful friends are found at your neighboring shelter just waiting for kind eyes and a loving hand. There are also breed-specific rescue organizations that you can seek out.
There are always questionable sources to purchase from, including pet stores, puppy mills, “backyard” breeders, and mail orders. Not everyone is horrible. Not everyone is wonderful. There are pups that are registerable, bred from AKC-registered parents, and may come with their own distinguished-looking authentications.
Certificates, though, cannot replace loving and accountable breeding practice. Pet owners need to take care of animals responsibly and love them as long as possible.
